people descending on the family. >> reporter: we're here at at&t park. expected to bring traffic to a standstill. >> performed for thousands of people in golden gate park to end the first day of the bluegrass festival. >> it was a huge event. been mellow. >> with events like this all across the city. the traffic will be anything but mellow. expecting a million visitors this weekend for the hardly strictly bluegrass festival. cup races, castro street fair and playoff games. >> if anything else, take public transportation. >> police and transportation officials recommend you do the same. extra bart cars, buses, fer ees and taxi's are being put into service. several streets around golden gate park and all

small city. >> oakland police have responded to a serious shootings. one happened at 80th street and international boulevard about 6:30 tonight. two men walked into the shop and one fired a weapon and both ran away. the victim was taken to highland hospital with a single gunshot wound. officers detained two suspects and did recover a gun at the scene. another shooting in east oakland sent police to the 1600 block of 92nd avenue. that shooting happened at 4:30 this afternoon. it appears people in two separate vehicles were shooting at each other. the victim who was shot in the back was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. one person was detained at the scene. >> and there is developing news of another shooting in east oakland. happened within the past hour at 96th avenue and burt street. three people were shot. at least one of them ended up dying. we have a crew on the scene and bring you more

information as it becomes available. >> police shot and killed a man suspected of killing a car. all happened near the intersection of briar great way and vanderbilt street this morning. officer spotted a green honda accord. as the officer approached the car, he saw a man sitting inside. police say the officer ordered the man to show his hands but the man refused and appeared to reach for a weapon. >> at that point, the officer fearing that the suspect was arming himself was forced to use lethal force. the suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. happened near tree view elementary school which was placed on lock down for 20 minutes. >> new at 10:00, a volleyball coach is under arrest accused of having a sexual relationship with a student. lafayette police arrested 22-year-old

nicholaus daniel kalosian. relationship lasted more than a year. the school has placed him on administrative leave. his bail has been set at $100,000. >> a vehicle crash that left more than 1,000 people in the dark tonight. happened before 7:00 tonight at sir francis drake boulevard. a car crashed into a power poll knocking the power lines across sir francis drake. pg&e says it expects to have power restored by midnight. gas leak blocked off several streets this afternoon. fire officials say a backhoe struck a four inch gas line. shelter in place and several streets were blocked off. 12 children were told to remain on campus until their parents could come get them. the leak was stopped around 5:40 this evening. >> a job breakthrough. unemployment rate dropped below 8% for the first time in almost

four years. christian has more now on how the unemployment rate may give the president some momentum on the campaign trail. >> reporter: the report released this morning shows unemployment dropped to a 44 month low, 7.8%. the president campaigning in ohio was quick to seize on the numbers following his poor showing in wednesday's debate. it's a reminder that this country's come too far to turn back now. >> professor says the new job numbers give the president a clear direction. >> i think the message for the president is we're on the right track. >> republican nominee mitt romney who surged in the polls following wednesday's debate arguing unemployment rate should be closer to 11% and the latest data are misleading. >> the reason it's come down is due to the fact more and more people have stopped looking for work. the labor report cuts into romney's surge. romney had a very strong

debate performance but this diminishes it because it takes the attention off the debate and puts the attention on a recovering economy. >> questions raised by prominent romney backer ge executive jack welch put the challenger in a tough spot. >> if he agrees with it, where's the evidence? and if he disagrees with it, once of his principle supporters is problematic. >> set to release one more job's report four days before the november election. ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now. the rate dropped from 8.1% because the number of people who got jobs soared. biggest monthly jump since 2003. 86,000 more jobs were added in july and august. tonight at 10:30 what we found when we asked people about

fleet week got off the ground with a roar of the blue angels docked all along. new at 10:00. live near one of the big attractions with a look at what's ahead this weekend. >> reporter: 3032 has been declared a secure zone. security is tight. you can see over here and the uss will be open to the public. today we got a preview of this attraction. just one of the big ones here at fleet week. the roar of the blue angels echoed through the bay today. all eyes on the jets as they sped through the sky. >> going 800 miles an hour this far away from each other. that's just amazing to me that they have the skills to do that. unbelievable. fleet week is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the water front and get a close look. people will be able to tour the 847 foot uss

fleet week is a celebration between the relationship communities have with men and women in uniform and we love to be a part of it. >> reporter: and the blue angels say this marks 100 years of marine corp aviation. ktvu channel 2 news. >> it's been nearly a decade since the san francisco giants and the oakland a's made it to the post season. a repeat of 2003. this was the scene at a rally today in front of at&t park. decked out in giant's gear for today's orange friday rally. first playoff appearance since winning the world series in 2010. >> get all ready for the playoffs. it's exciting. >> does your boss know where you are today? >> no. i got the day off. >> safe to say people on both sides of the bay have baseball fever tonight. the giants and reds face off in game one tomorrow night at 6:30. game 2

firefighters this morning responded to a brushfire at a homeless encampment. started about 9:30 along oakland road. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading. a student sexting scandal has hit the north bay. reports on who is involved and why some parents say they feel helpless trying to fight it. >> photos are making the rounds among the rim county students whom we won't identify. there was a message on my phone. it was blocked but it was just like junk. >> the principal wrote to parents last week about inappropriate and provocative photos known as sexting of middle and high school girls that were being circulated from students to different schools. >> sending lick pictures of them -- sending pictures of themselves. >> at the county office of

feminist vigil ante march. dozens of people marched for two hours tonight. one that said disarm cops. the protestors marched right through monthly first friday festival. police say there were no arrests. police are looking for a suspected burglar. a homeowner says this man stole a tablet computer and gaming console from her home yesterday just after 9:00 in the morning. she told police she saw the suspicious man down the street on arrowhead way as he was driving home. once inside her home, she realized that she had been burglarized. >> i was excited. i couldn't believe it in the beginning. then i read it and it was true. >> it was the letter he'd be waiting for. the program now allowing him to work. and what he plans to do.

to prosecute the police officer who shot and killed him. the da's office has filed charges against two people in connection with a jewelry store robbery. facing three counts of second degree robbery charges. police say the two robs in august. the suspects were armed and removed jewelry at gunpoint. police are looking for additional suspects. >> it's just a small single piece of paper but for the people in the south bay who just received it in the mail, it is a real game changer. why that piece of paper is so important, it brought some of them to tears. >> he kept checking the mailbox, then yesterday it finally came. it was the letter christian had been waiting for. >> i was excited. i couldn't believe it in the beginning. but then i read it and it was true. >> he was among the first approved for a work permit under the deferred action for

more on that developing news out of oakland. police are investigating a shooting where two people were hit just over an hour ago. began at 96th avenue and burt street when a vehicle was hit by gunfire. traveled two blocks where it crashed and caught fire. one person is in grave condition. witnesses tell us they heard 35 to 40 shots at the time of the shooting. no arrests have been made. >> new details tonight about the first human rabies death in 20 years. our health and science center tells us how a single bat could have put dozens of people all over the world at risk. it happened somewhere in

here. a lot going on out there. we have clouds and fog. that's how it's going to be the next couple days. we look outside. clouds to the north and south of us. low clouds and fog along the coast. the winds are light. typically this time of night the winds might be going 20 or 30 miles an hour. we have sort of a mild weather pattern sitting over the top. there's a low fresh system sitting off shore. it means what we had today which wasn't that bad is what we're going to see the next couple days. at least similar weather. lots of high clouds. a little bit of fog, sunshine. not a lot of wind. not great news for the america's cup sailors. and not a bad overall pattern. the temperatures will be below the average. lots of 60s and low 70s. the computer model lays it out. that's a lot of high cloud. there's a little bit of fog wrapped up in here as well. in the afternoon it burns back.
